Gurugram, 26 April – Late last night, gau rakshak or cow protection volunteers foiled cattle smugglers’ plans at two separate locations in Gurugram, recovering 18 animals and a consignment of banned meat. Acting on tip-offs, the vigilantes joined forces with local police to track down the traffickers and free the cattle.
According to sources, the first alert warned that a canter truck carrying about 18 cattle was coming from Punjab via the KMP Expressway toward Mewat, where the animals were to be slaughtered and their meat distributed illegally. The volunteers began pursuit from Sonipat and followed the vehicle across the expressway, finally catching up near Tawarud. There, a tyre suddenly blew out; under cover of darkness, the smugglers abandoned the truck and fled on foot. The rescued cattle were immediately sent—with police assistance—to a nearby gaushala or cow shed for veterinary care. The Gurugram Police have registered a case and impounded the canter for further investigation.
Shortly afterward, a second tip-off revealed that a Mahindra pickup was transporting prohibited meat along the Gurugram–Palwal road. Again coordinating with police, the gau rakshak or cow protectors tailed the vehicle and, after a strenuous chase, forced it to stop. The traffickers escaped into the night, but the illicit meat was unearthed and buried on site, and the pickup was seized by authorities. A formal complaint has been filed and the matter is under active inquiry.
Notably, this follows a recent operation in which vigilantes and police intercepted a luxury car carrying trafficked cattle worth over ₹5 million, rescuing the animals and arresting the perpetrators.
