New Delhi/Gurugram (Paridhi Dhasmana), 15 April — Businessman Robert Vadra, husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) today in connection with an alleged money laundering case stemming from a controversial land deal in Shikohpur village, Gurugram.
The case involves Vadra’s company, Skylight Hospitality, which purchased land in 2008 from Onkareshwar Properties for ₹7.5 crore and later sold it to real estate giant DLF for ₹58 crore. The significant profit margin has raised concerns with investigators, who suspect that the transaction may have been used to launder black money.
During the questioning, Vadra maintained his innocence, stating:
“Whenever I become the voice of the people, the government tries to suppress me. It’s been 20 years, nothing has been found, and nothing will be found now. The BJP is using institutions like the ED as political weapons. I am not afraid.”
Vadra, who had been summoned earlier on April 8 but failed to appear, claimed that the investigation is yet another attempt to sideline his political contributions and curb his influence in public affairs. His comments suggest that the probe is politically motivated, a claim that comes amid heightened scrutiny of his business dealings.
The ED, currently examining financial documents and transaction records related to the deal, is focused on whether the land sale was a façade for money laundering activities under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Investigators have already reviewed several key documents, and the agency now seeks further clarification directly from Vadra.
This is not the first time Vadra has faced such inquiries; he has previously been questioned in connection with an international money laundering case. His familial ties to prominent political figures, including Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi and her brother-in-law Rahul Gandhi, have only intensified the spotlight on this case.
As the investigation unfolds, the ED continues to scrutinize the layers of financial transactions and documentation that raised suspicions when the land was resold at a dramatically inflated price. The outcome of this probe could have significant political repercussions, particularly as debates intensify over the use of investigative agencies for political ends.
Residents and political observers alike await further developments in a case that many believe could reshape the landscape of political accountability in India.
