Karnal, May 6 – Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi paid a condolence visit on Tuesday to the family of Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, the Indian Navy officer who was killed in the terrorist attack at Pahalgam on April 22. Gandhi arrived at the Narwal residence in Karnal, Haryana, in the afternoon, where he was joined by Rohtak MP Deepender Singh Hooda and several other party leaders. Further details of the visit are awaited.
Lt. Narwal, who hailed from Haryana, had travelled to Kashmir with his wife, Himanshi of Gurugram, on their honeymoon when militants opened fire on tourists at a meadow near Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, killing 28 people, including the young officer. Himanshi witnessed the attack that claimed her husband’s life.
In recent weeks, Himanshi Narwal faced a torrent of online trolling after she appealed to fellow citizens not to spread hatred against Muslims and Kashmiris in the wake of her husband’s death. Her plea—urging compassion and unity—drew fierce criticism from some quarters, sparking a heated debate on social media.
By personally meeting the bereaved family, Rahul Gandhi underscored his party’s solidarity with the victims of terror and their loved ones, while highlighting the need for communal harmony during times of national tragedy.
