Gurugram, September 10, 2025: In a strict enforcement action against long-pending encroachments, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority has freed approximately 3 acres of green belt land in Sector 31 that had been illegally occupied by jhuggis for over 15 years. The Enforcement Wing of GMDA, with support of Gurugram Police and local RWAs, successfully removed around 100 illegally constructed jhuggis that had mushroomed over the years along the green stretch adjoining the National Highway and Jharsa Road.
Initially, only 10–20 jhuggis had come up on the site, but the number gradually expanded to over 100 over the years. The site was inspected twice by the Enforcement Wing of GMDA, led by DTP GMDA and Nodal Officer for Encroachments in Gurugram, R.S. Batth. A two-months’ notice was also served to clear the green belts which were illegally occupied by them. Despite repeated notices and sufficient time provided for relocation, the encroachers did not vacate the land. During the third and final inspection visit, two days’ time was given to all inhabitants to shift their belongings. To restore the green belts for public use, GMDA on Tuesday carried out a removal drive, demolishing the unauthorized jhuggis that had encroached the area.
The demolition was followed by malba removal, which is currently underway. Once the green area is cleared, GMDA will also install missing grills on the stretch and take up landscaping and development of the green belts to restore the environment.
The encroachment had severely deteriorated environmental and sanitation conditions in the area. Waste dumping in the adjoining naalah had led to foul smell and unhygienic surroundings, causing inconvenience to nearby residents. With the removal of the illegal structures, local residents and RWA have welcomed GMDA’s intervention and expressed appreciation for addressing this long-pending issue.
In addition to clearing the green belts, GMDA in coordination with MCG has also acted against market encroachments in Sector 31. Almost 10 joint visits were carried out by the DTP (GMDA) cum Nodal Officer for Encroachments along with MCG officials. Strong enforcement action was taken twice, resulting in the market becoming nearly 80% encroachment-free. Support of the local Councillor was also sought in the matter.
“GMDA is taking strict action against any form of encroachment on green belts and public land. Multiple warnings and directions are always issued first to the violators, but in case of non-compliance, enforcement action is taken. These drives will be continued across Gurugram to reclaim public land and to further develop adequate infrastructure and green cover in the city,” said R.S. Batth.
