Gurugram (Paridhi Dhasmana), 21 July: Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from his post with immediate effect, citing health reasons and the need to prioritise medical advice. The resignation, submitted to President Droupadi Murmu, has been made under Article 67(a) of the Constitution of India, which provides for resignation by writing to the President.
In a formally worded letter dated July 21, Dhankhar conveyed his decision to step down and expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve in one of the country’s highest constitutional offices. His message was marked by dignity, composure, and a sense of satisfaction in public service.
“To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately,” he wrote.
Throughout the letter, Dhankhar reflected on his tenure with appreciation and respect, extending heartfelt thanks to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Council of Ministers, and Members of Parliament for their support and cooperation.
He highlighted the collaborative spirit of his time in office and recalled his role in witnessing what he described as a period of “remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development” for the country.
“It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India’s progress during this significant period,” he stated. “I am filled with pride in Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements and hold unwavering confidence in her brilliant future.”
Dhankhar also noted the warmth and affection he received from Parliamentarians, and the invaluable experiences gained while serving in the role—particularly as Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, a key constitutional responsibility of the Vice President.
Having taken office on August 11, 2022, Jagdeep Dhankhar brought with him decades of experience as a legal professional and public servant. His tenure was marked by a consistent emphasis on constitutional values and procedural discipline in the functioning of Parliament’s Upper House.
With this resignation, the post of Vice President now stands vacant, and the constitutional process to appoint a successor will follow in due course.
The former Vice President exits public office with a tone of humility, pride, and sincere reflection—leaving behind a note of gratitude, and a firm belief in India’s continuing journey forward.
