Gurugram (Paridhi Dhasmana), 10 April – In a move set to change the way people travel, officials shared new details about the Gurugram Metro expansion project during an important meeting on April 10, 2025. Leaders from the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) discussed the project, which is aimed at modernizing the city’s transport and boosting economic opportunities.
First announced by the Haryana Government in December 2023, the project will create a 28.5 km metro line with 27 carefully chosen stations to connect key areas across Gurugram. The construction is scheduled to begin on May 1, 2025, and the total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 5,452.72 crores. It is backed by funds from both the Central Government (Rs 896.19 crores) and the Haryana Government (Rs 4,556.53 crores), showing a strong commitment to improving local infrastructure.
The project will be built in three phases. In the first phase, the line will run from Millennium City Centre to Sector 9. This phase has a tender value of Rs 1,286 crores, with the tender opening on April 22, 2025. In the second phase, the line will be extended from Sector 9 to DLF Cyber City, and in the third phase, a metro depot will be built in Sector 33. All phases are planned to finish by May 2029, just four years after construction begins.
The proposed metro stations are designed to serve important commercial, residential, and industrial parts of Gurugram. They include:
- Millennium City Centre
- Sector 45
- Cyber Park
- Sector 47
- Subhash Chowk
- Sector 48
- Sector 72A
- Hero Honda Chowk
- Udyog Vihar Phase 6
- Sector 10
- Sector 37
- Basai Village
- Sector 101 (Dwarka Expressway)
- Sector 9
- Sector 7
- Sector 4
- Sector 5
- Ashok Vihar
- Sector 3
- Bajghera Road
- Palam Vihar Extension
- Palam Vihar
- Sector 23A
- Sector 22
- Udyog Vihar Phase 4
- Udyog Vihar Phase 5
- Cyber City
The metro will start with trains that have three coaches but can later be increased to six coaches as more people use the service. There is also an additional 1.85 km stretch from Basai to the Dwarka Expressway, which will further link areas like Old Gurugram and Cyber City to the metro network.
The project is expected to serve about 7.26 lakh passengers during the first five years. This new metro service should help cut down on the heavy traffic in Gurugram by offering a fast, safe, and reliable travel option. It is also likely to spur economic growth, especially in real estate, as developers begin new projects along the metro line, including along the busy Dwarka Expressway.
With construction starting in May 2025 and the project set to finish by May 2029, the Gurugram Metro expansion is seen as a key step in bridging the gap between Old and New Gurugram. Residents and commuters eagerly await the positive changes this project will bring to daily travel and the urban environment. This initiative reinforces Gurugram’s image as a forward-thinking city ready to embrace modern transport solutions and stimulate both economic and social growth in the coming years.
