Gurugram (Paridhi Dhasmana), 25 April – Nodal Officer R.S. Bhatt today deployed a bulldozer to destroy roughly two dozen street-vendor carts parked illegally near the bus stand. Bhatt maintained that the carts were not owned by needy vendors but by a “cart mafia.”
When Bhatt and his team arrived, the vendors scattered. Accompanied by Gurugram Municipal Corporation staff, Bath had the carts gathered into one spot and then crushed them with a JCB.
Speaking to reporters after the demolition, Bhatt said each individual owned up to 15 carts, and one owner even faces a knife-wielding charge. “These carts are causing severe traffic jams and lawlessness by a small group of 11–12 people, inconveniencing millions of commuters every day,” he said. He added that vendors had been warned five times previously but ignored the notices. “This hooliganism by a handful of individuals will no longer be tolerated,” Bhatt declared. He vowed to identify the mafia ringleaders, take strict action against them, and file an FIR.
Bhatt’s anti-encroachment drive also affected cobblers working quietly on the roadside, who were asked to pack up and leave. One vendor claimed that although he had already moved his cart away, a 100–150-strong team following Bhatt chased him down, seized his cart, and had it bulldozed in front of the PNB bank.
