New Delhi (Ajay Verma). National Mission on the Use of Biomass in Thermal Power Plants (SAMARTHA) in collaboration with National Power Training Institute (NPTI) organized a National Biomass Conference on “ABC-Accelerating Biomass Co-Firing” in coal based thermal power plants. This conference was inaugurated by Secretary, Ministry of Power, Pankaj Agarwal IAS along with Additional Secretary of Ministry of Power, Piyush Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC Limited, Gurdeep Singh, CEA Member (Thermal) Praveen Gupta, Chairman of CAQM, Rajesh Verma and Director General of NPTI, Dr. Tripta Thakur. Apart from the Ministry, regulatory bodies, financial institutions, pellet manufacturers, entrepreneurs, OEMs, farmers organizations etc. participated in this conference. Farmers also organized a grand exhibition on biomass which was appreciated by all.
The objective of the conference is to promote a favorable environment for promoting co-firing of biomass pellets in thermal power plants in India and to provide a common platform to all stakeholders in this sector to share their knowledge and experience.
Four sessions were organized on different topics on this platform, which included important topics like Accelerating Biomass Co-firing in Thermal Power Plants, New Frontiers: Biomass Pelletization, Converting Biomass – from Bale to Pellet, Advancing Standards and Research in Biomass.
IAS Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Power, who was the chief guest at the conference, said that 1400 units of electricity is consumed per person per year in the country, which is targeted to be increased to 3500 units. So that the dream of a developed India can be realized. In 2030, 50 percent of the electricity production capacity will be generated from non-fossil fuel. Currently this figure is 49.2. Aggarwal said that the run rate of biomass co-firing was 700 tonnes which has now increased to 5000 tonnes. Their target is to take it to 10,000 tonnes of biomass co-firing.
In collaboration with the National Biomass Conference on “ABC-Accelerating Biomass Co-firing”, NPTI Director General Dr. Tripta Thakur expressed her gratitude to all the chief guests, guests and participants who attended the conference. Dr. Thakur said that this conference is a concrete step towards the radical changes taking place in the energy sector in India. The stubble management team has not only doubled the income of farmers but has also helped in protecting the environment. This initiative also reflects our commitment towards environmental protection.
Let us tell you that to tackle the burning problem of air pollution due to agricultural stubble burning, especially in the National Capital Region (NCR) and to reduce the carbon footprint of thermal power generation, the Ministry of Power launched the National Mission on Use of Biomass in Thermal Power Plants (SAMARTHA) on 12 July 2021 and the revised Biomass Policy was issued on 8 October 2021, making it mandatory for all TPPs in the country to use 5 per cent biomass pellets in co-firing with coal.
