Gurugram/Dehradun, 14 May – The family of Uttarakhand Police Sub-Inspector Pradeep Negi has accused Paras Hospital, Gurugram, of exploiting him financially before handing over his body following his death from liver failure on May 12. Negi, posted to Pithoragarh’s Special Intelligence Unit, was referred to Paras Hospital on March 15 after initial treatment for jaundice at Max Hospital, Dehradun.
According to relatives, the hospital insisted on a ₹45 lakh final bill—despite an earlier deposit of ₹22 lakh—and refused to release Negi’s remains until full payment. Under duress, the family raised an additional ₹13 lakh, paying a total of ₹35 lakh before the body was surrendered late on May 12. Paras management reportedly still demands the balance.
Negi’s sister-in-law, Vinita Rawat, has appealed to the Haryana and Uttarakhand governments for intervention, lamenting, “We sacrificed everything to save him. Even in death, we find no peace.” His brother, Dipender Negi, pointed out discrepancies in the final bill and criticized the hospital’s hardline stance.
After retrieving the body, the family transported it to Dehradun in the early hours of May 13 and later performed last rites in Haridwar. The incident has sparked outrage over private hospitals’ sensitivity and has prompted calls for regulatory action.
