Incident Overview
Gurugram, 30 April – On 26 April 2025 at around 8:30 p.m., a 26-year-old female youth allegedly under the influence of alcohol drove her Hyundai Creta into an autorickshaw carrying two passengers on the Sector-43 road near the Sector 53 Police Station in Gurugram. The collision left the auto’s female passenger injured; police seized the Creta and arrested the young driver the following morning.
Why This Matters?
This case highlights rising concerns over drunk-driving among Gurugram’s youth, where a single moment of negligence can cause serious harm. As traffic volumes increase, the outcome of this investigation may influence both law-enforcement measures and public-safety campaigns targeting young motorists.
Detailed Account
According to a written complaint filed on 28 April 2025 by the injured passenger’s husband, “we were returning home in an autorickshaw when a car came up from behind and struck us with such force that my wife was thrown against the seat,” he stated, underscoring the youth driver’s alleged high speed and recklessness. His account prompted Sector 53 police to register an FIR under Sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt), and 304A (causing death by negligence), although the passenger’s injuries, while serious, are not life-threatening.
Police say they first learned of the collision late on 26 April when hospital staff reported admitting an injured woman who was unable to provide details. Officers quickly traced the Creta to its owner’s residence in Sector 53, where a breathalyzer test “confirmed she was well above the legal alcohol limit,” an investigating officer noted. “We have seized the vehicle and booked the young driver in accordance with the law,” added SHO Rajesh Kumar, warning that “strict legal proceedings will follow to deter anyone from drinking and driving.”
Neighbours and passersby were shaken by the crash. One onlooker, who rushed to help, said, “It’s unbelievable how quickly things can go wrong.” Another put it bluntly: “Anyone could have been killed tonight.”
Next Steps & Advisory
As the youth driver remains in custody, police expect to file a chargesheet within 90 days, after which the case will proceed to court. Meanwhile, Gurugram authorities have announced stepped-up sobriety checkpoints in the weeks ahead and reiterated their warning: “If any driver is found operating a vehicle under the influence, strict legal action will be taken.”
