Gurugram (Paridhi Dhasmana), 12 May – In a shocking reminder of ongoing civic negligence, a man in Gurugram narrowly escaped death after falling into an uncovered drain on Old Delhi Road near Dundahera village on Monday morning. Quick-thinking bystanders jumped into action, pulling him to safety just in time.
The incident occurred at a stretch of road where the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) had removed drain covers weeks ago for pre-monsoon cleaning—but never replaced them. According to eyewitnesses, the man lost his balance while walking and suddenly plunged into the open drain. Passers-by, including local shopkeepers, witnessed the fall and without hesitation rushed to his aid. Two individuals leapt into the drain and, after a strenuous effort, successfully rescued the unconscious man.
“It was horrifying to see someone just disappear into the drain,” said one shopkeeper who helped in the rescue. “Had we not been here, it could have ended very differently.”
The man reportedly regained consciousness shortly after being pulled out. Fortunately, he did not sustain serious injuries, though he was visibly shaken and momentarily unresponsive. Onlookers splashed water on his face and helped clean the filth off him until he slowly recovered his senses.
Local residents have been vocal about the dangerous condition of the drain for weeks. According to them, MCG staff opened the drain for cleaning ahead of the monsoon season but abandoned the work midway. No barricades or warning signs were placed, and the area was left exposed to daily pedestrian traffic.
Despite orders reportedly issued by senior MCG officials to cover open drains and manholes, no action was taken in this case. The incident, captured on mobile phones by eyewitnesses, quickly went viral on social media. Outraged citizens flooded the platforms with posts mocking the corporation’s apathy, calling it a disaster waiting to happen.
“Are we waiting for someone to die before MCG wakes up?” questioned one post, echoing a common sentiment among angry netizens.
As of now, MCG has not issued an official statement, though sources indicate that an internal inquiry might be initiated. Some workers were seen inspecting the site later in the day, possibly to finally address the safety hazard.
This incident once again underscores the urgent need for greater accountability in urban infrastructure management. While a life was thankfully saved this time, the city may not always be so lucky. Unless timely action is taken, Gurugram’s uncovered drains may become open traps in waiting.
